  6.     Daylong was my slumber. At the sunset,
  7.     Wakening, I beheld the clouds, a hundred
  8.     Shapes of antic gods and beasts of wonder
  9.     Gathered on the horizon.
  10.  
  11.     Vulcan, with his forge behind him, towered,
  12.     Greaved with aureate fire, against the boundless
  13.     Concave west; and whirling Scylla spouted
  14.     Purple spray on Triton.
  15.  
  16.     There, with gaping mouth, the Mantichora
  17.     Showed his teeth and uttered silent roarings;
  18.     Light and silky as thistle-down, the Astomians
  19.     Came from lands of marvel,
  20.  
  21.     Wafted on their ether; and the headless
  22.     People followed after them, the Blemmyes,
  23.     Searing on humped shoulders through the heavens
  24.     Their enormous fardels.
  25.  
  26.     There, across dismembered Titans crawling,
  27.     Python rolled his volumes; there the Gorgon,
  28.     Eyed with blinding gold, through rack amorphous
  29.     Trailed her sinuous ringlets.

  31.     There, with skyward soles, with head inverted,
  32.     Hung the Sciapod, torn from his earthy
  33.     Plot remote; and swam the cod-tailed Mermaid,
  34.     From the surges rivers.
  35.  
  36.     While the sunset, deepening and rubious,
  37.     Limned the bestiary shapes in lurid
  38.     Salamandrine hues, and robed with murex
  39.     Gods from myths forgotten,
  40.  
  41.     I, the watcher, cried: "O clouds of wonder,
  42.     Fables, carry me where an age-long sunset
  43.     Arches your lost Thule, by no sullen
  44.     Earth-born shadows blotted!"
